Let's start by the shortcomings:
1) The mastering of NMR requires a very specialized, long-term training.
2) Even a medium-end equipment is rather expensive. As a rule of thumb, pricing is ca. 1,000 US$ per MHz and even larger for the high-end instruments (600-950 MHz).
The maintainance is also costly and needs of specialized personnel.
Benchtop instruments (42-80 Mz) are affordable for a lab (30,000-80,000 US$) and need neither maintainance nor specialized personnel.
How come the advantages?
We can round them up in just one statement:

NMR is definitely the solution to solve even the most sofisticated structures in organic chemistry.

It is an analytical tool like no other!!!
