The reaction of 1-chloropropane with benzene catalyzed by AlCl3 leads to isopropylbenzene and NOT to 1-phenylpropane. On the other hand, the reaction with isobutyl chloride in the same conditions produces tert-butylbenzene INSTEAD of 1-phenyl-2-methylpropane. Why's that? How could you get 1-phenylpropane or 1-phenyl-2-methylpropane by alternative methods?
