Sulfonation requires the concourse of sulfur trioxide that suffers protonation with sulfuric acid and is thus activated and prone to be attacked by an aromatic compound.
Sulfonation is reversible. The sulfonic group can be introduced and, in a subsquent step, removed. This allows for the momentary blocking of benzene locations in a synthetic sequence.
